Discarded cigarette starts fire: police

VERNON ? A discarded cigarette started a fire at 333 Merline Road just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, police said. The resident put a cigarette in a planter between her garage doors and went inside, police said. A neighbor soon alerted her to the fire, which was burning up the vinyl siding of her house.
